This 90s Trend is Making a Shocking Comeback: L’ORÈAL Color Richie Review

The beauty and fashion world’s fascination with the trends of the 90s are showing no signs of slowing down. Trends such as brown lips and grunge eyes were expected to be recycled by the high fashion world. One trend we didn’t expect to be brought back was the frosted lip.

“Today, with new technology, frosted lipsticks have better light reflectivity then they used to. Because of the finer pearl particles, they deliver a smoother finish and an even application,” says makeup artist Philippe Chansel. Lipstick Queen founder Poppy King agrees, noting that the shimmer and frost are much more sheer than the chalky, pastel-white frosts we saw in past decades. Not to mention that the background shades of the frosts are also more flattering — think berries, bronzes, and warm neutrals rather than bubblegum pink and washed out tan. “What’s great about these new iterations of shimmer is that the particles of the shimmer are much finer milled so the formula is much more moist,” she says. “They don’t look as artificial —they look more natural.”

I’m totally on board with this trend. Celebrities from Sarah Hyland, to Kourtney Kardashian are also feeling this trend. If the frosted lip is worn correctly, the light and the shimmer from the lipstick reflect off of each other to create the illusion of fuller lips.

Claire Danes was my inspiration for this trend. We have roughly the same lip shape and skin tone. I scoured the internet and found a picture of her wearing the frosted lip, then I set out to find a cheap dupe for the shade.

I went to my local drugstore and came across the new L’Orèal Color Richie in the shade 135 “Ballerina Shoes” and knew it was the one. The lipstick was around $10.

This lip color does have cool undertones, and the pink is very pale, so I suggest you use it if you have fair skin and light lips. I like to layer my Milani Color Statement Lip Liner in shade 13 “Pretty Pink” under the lipstick because it makes the shimmer more manageable by adding a brighter pink under the shimmer.

The product goes on very smooth, but I do have to reapply quite a few times during the day. That being said, the formula is very creamy despite all of the shimmer in it. The color is very light and looks even better with a baby pink lip liner under it. The shimmer makes your lips look full and your skin look flawless! I would definitely recommend.
